Newton’s rules of philosophizing

As almost everything in the Principia Newton’s Rules of Philosophizing are serving propaganda to hide Newton’s violations of sound reasoning to propagate his dogmas.

Rule 2

Accordingly, to natural effects of the same kind the same causes should be assigned, as far as possible.

  1. The examples Newton gives are really about reasoning by analogy and does not apply to the statement of the rule: “As for example, respiration in humans and in animals, the descent of stones in Europe and in America, Light in a cooking fire and in the sun, the reflection of light on earth and in the planets.”
  2. I read the rule differently.
  3. “…to natural effects of the same kind…” means that we are talking about natural effects, right, we are not talking about, some supernatural event.
  4. “…same causes should be assigned…” means that effects of natural kind must be explained by causes of natural kind.
  5. Does Newton heed his own advice in his Principia? Hardly. The fundamental cause in the Principia is the supernatural cause Newton call euphemistically “force”. Newton explains all natural effect with this supernatural cause.
  6. That’s I say that these rules are self-serving sophistry to hide Newton’s occultism.
